2D Portfolio: 5 Value Composition Painting
Goals:
Create an interesting tempera painting, based
on observation of detail of our studio environment, where you have simplified
the composition into flat shapes using only five values (black, white and 3 grays).
Interest created by choice of scene, one that contains a
variety of shapes created by objects and value areas.
Interest created by moving center of interest away from the
center of the page. Use the “Rule of
Thirds” or other compositional strategy.
Process:
- Do several compositional
studies to try out possible scenes and compositions. Do vertical and
horizontal compositions of each interesting scene.
- Choose a position for the
center of interest. Use “Principle of the Thirds” or other plan.
- Develop a “paint by
numbers” diagram on illustration board. Keep your lines light so they
won’t show through. You can even label your value areas. Pay careful
attention to the shapes of your value areas. Do not over simplify them.
Training you eyes to see these areas is an important aspect of this
project.
- Examine tonal balance and
if needed:
- Alter tones to highlight
center of interest
- Alter tones to diminish
supporting areas
- Remove unnecessary
objects.
- Change the shape of any
boring objects.
